“There’s no magic wand” – The urgent need for new treatments
One in ten women with recurrent yeast infections develops a stubborn, hard-to-treat condition for which no effective therapies currently exist. At Danderyd Hospital, researcher Cathrin Alvendal at the Women’s Clinic research unit is working to change that. This is the second instalment in Life Science Sweden’s series on fungi.
It’s easy to get lost in the tunnels beneath Danderyd Hospital. But opposite BB Stockholm’s postnatal clinic, a discreet sign reads: Women’s Clinic Research. This is the only clinical unit in Sweden dedicated to research on vaginal fungal infections.
“I don’t know of any other clinical unit in Sweden working on this. It’s a rather narrow field, perhaps,” says Cathrin Alvendal, a researcher and physician with long experience of gynaecological infections and pain conditions.
