A food-based strategy to stop gut infections early

Most gastrointestinal infections are treated only after symptoms have already developed. Researcher Andreas Hougaard Laustsen-Kiel aims to reduce risk earlier by adding specially engineered binding proteins directly to food and animal feed.

“In many gastrointestinal infections, toxins and other virulence factors can cause damage very early, sometimes even before an infection has been diagnosed,” says Andreas Hougaard Laustsen-Kiel, professor of Antibody Technologies at the Technical University of Denmark.

His research therefore focuses on proteins that bind and neutralize these harmful factors in the gastrointestinal tract, without killing the bacteria themselves.
