Agreement in the EU on eight years of data exclusivity for new medicines

New pharmaceuticals will be covered by eight years of data exclusivity, according to the proposed new pharmaceutical legislation that EU countries have now agreed upon after prolonged negotiations.

The European Commission had previously proposed reducing the protection period to six years, and the Swedish government views the new proposal as progress.

"We are pleased with the negotiation success and that countries have aligned with our position on maintaining data protection. This is a major achievement for Sweden and for patients in the EU," said Minister of Health Acko Ankarberg Johansson in a press release.
